Nuclear safety notions and safety case in a licensing context
The course will present at first the questions raised by the safe management of radioactive waste in both the short and the long term. It will then present the typical contents of a regulatory framework governing radioactive waste management, for a disposal facility, and the associated safety requirements.
The course will then examine:
- The question of how to address the operational safety of the disposal facility (modelling, scenarios) with respect to standard regulatory requirements
- The question of how to address the post-closure safety of the disposal facility (input data, modelling, scenarios) with respect to standard regulatory requirements. This part is the main part of this training course and significant time is spent on the development of scenarios (both the Normal Evolution Scenario and the altered scenarios), the data used for the modelling and the modelling itself (see figure below).
The typical contents of the documentation expected by a regulatory body during a licensing procedure:
- At the Preliminary Safety Assessment (PSAR) stage
- At the Final Safety Assessment (PSAR) stage
