Management of spent fuel and radioactive waste

The training module provides an overview on waste management, in particular in terms of international standards, waste classification and safety objectives. Pre-disposal stages are presented to understand key issues associated to waste itself, which are of concern for a safe final disposal.
In order to highlight the features of disposal facilities, a lecture compares interim storage and near-surface disposal facilities in terms of safety requirements. Beyond the three disposal types that are mining, near-surface and geological disposals, the module goes deeper in the safety issues for near-surface and geological disposal facilities.
A practical exercise (working group) is also proposed for trainees with the aim to experience a review dealing with the disposal of radioactive spent sources. At last, as an integral part of waste disposal management, stakeholders’ involvement is addressed.
